I grew up watching public television and I still value it so deeply. 90% of the news I get comes from NPR when I’m driving in my car. Public media made me who I am today! Keep it going.

Radio – It Changes the World

I remember growing up and my dad listening to public broadcasting. As a kid, I found it boring. But as I aged, I began to not only be interested but sometimes even saying “wait, don’t change it yet.” As an adult the tables turned and I’d even share stories my dad didn’t know about with him. I vividly remember sharing a particular one called “Last Man on the Mountain” about Jimmy Weekly. It was an incredible story about Jimmy standing his ground on the historic Blair mountain, even when everyone one else sold out to coal. It moved me. And it moved my dad even more – to the point of tears. I remember it like yesterday because it isn’t everyday you see your dad cry. My Dad passed away several months ago, but reading about the cuts that may be made to public radio immediately brought him to my mind. He would be so upset. So my vow to #ProtectPublicMedia isn’t just my fight, but I’ll be fighting for my Dad, too, since he isn’t here to do it. Public Radio informs, inspires, and without it, we would have a more mundane, ignorant world. Let’s strive for a vibrant, educated one instead.

I resolve to fight to protect funding for public broadcasting so our American citizens can stay informed and entertained with quality and integrity. NPR and PBS and all other public broadcasting venues are a vital part of our social structure. This can not be thrown out on a whim.

Protection of our public media is paramount to me because I rely on staying informed of and educated on the issues from a source that is not influenced or controlled by political, commercial, or special interest groups. I enjoy the essential local programming and services. Public broadcasting is essential in a free society and public broadcasting deserves federal funds support!

I support public media because it provides the most objective news reporting I’m aware of. Their goal is provide dependable news, not make money or support political agendas. Like public libraries, public media provides information necessary for a healthy democracy. It also provides education around many other subjects that add to ones overall understanding of the world and the complex issues we all face.

We listen to the radio all day, both the AM News channel and the FM music channel.

We have three Public TV channels. My now-adult children loved Sesame Street, Mister Rogers, etc. I tune to the kids channel during my workouts!

And the award-winning new shows, as well as the World channel.

And the crafts/food channel.

Our life is much richer because we have public media!

It is with fondness that I recall listening to public radio with my father as he milked cows in the evening/night. Exposed to “dramatic” theatrical performances a la the golden age of radio… transported through music from classical pianists to the disjointed mystical rhythms of jazz… Watching motion picture winner Forest Gump, and feeling a connection with Forest Jr mesmerized and connected to educational fundamentals of PBS… Sesame Street providing sight and sound recognition of letters, puppets reinforcing numbers, shapes, and concepts… Ethical values, demonstrations of feelings, encouraged imagination and design from Mr Rogers… Bob Ross’ soothing tone and sweeping brush strokes lulling me to rest on Sabbath afternoons or sick days home from school…

And now, my vehicle’s radio station programmed so I can stay informed on politics, economics, and cultural events and entities. .. morning/weekend edition playing while coffee brews, breakfast is assembled, shoes located and our family gets out the door for school/work. … All things considered, car talk, wait wait don’t tell me, splendid table, thistle & the shamrock, EDM, Radio hour/lab….

Passed on to an 7 yr old who’s planning her 8th birthday party centered around a Wild Kratts undersea/water theme… one who gladly shares with her parents trivia facts about creatures/creature power. . Who loves the humor of odd squad… and the discovery skills of splash and bubbles

Shared with a 4 year old…. Connection of the warmth and wisdom of Fred Rogers via Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. .. short tunes reinforcing community messages and social/emotional intelligence. .. exploring the prehistoric ages ( and Jim Henson’s legacy) thru Dinosaur Train. .. And the continued educational passion of Sesame Street. .

I’m a sustaining donor of Capitol Public Radio in Sacramento. The most important service to me is local news coverage that’s commercial free and more in-depth than local TV news.

Please consider supporting all funding for the public media on the upcoming votes. These forms of information and entertainment are unlike any other and keep people informed with unbiased information and a very, very wide range of entertainment from local music to educational programming for children.
